Enzyme exfoliation has become quite popular to those individuals seeking softer, smoother skin. Now that chemists have
figured out how to put enzymes into skin care products and keep them stable, they have become a welcome addition to the
skin care industry. This natural, non-irritation ingredient treat everything from dry skin to acne. Enzymes are actually
proteins that act as catalyst in chemical reactions during which time the enzyme is not changed. For example, a proteolytic
enzyme is one that breaks down or dissolves protein. Proteolytic enzymes are used in topical preparations, masks, creams
and cleansers to break down the keratin (a protein) in the dead cells on the surface of the skin. They serve a useful purpose
in a healthy skin care program because they gently exfoliate the skin leaving a soft smooth surface. Papaya
(papain) and pineapple (bromelin) are the main sources of proteolytic enzymes. Many people find enzyme exfoliation an
alternative treatment to alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s) or Retin A. AHA’s and Retin A work much deeper to exfoliate and
increase cellular turnover as well as stimulate collagen while the enzymes gently peel away the outer layer to
reveal a softer smoother surface. AHA’s, Retin A and enzymes are all excellent tools that work well together to improve
the overall texture and clarity of the skin. For more information or to schedule a skin evaluation, please feel free to call
