YEP! If you see me around my plastic surgeon and you hear me say "suck me", don't worry, I mean liposuction. I WANT LIPOSUCTION! I have had my children. I work out at least three times a week. I am not too much over my ideal weight but no matter how many crunches I do or how much I weight train, I still have this little pouch on my stomach. Ladies, this does not look good when you want to wear those skin tight "cat suits or bikinis". Yes, I do wear bikinis. (In my backyard.) I have this rule; "people with (fat pockets) should not wear lycra." That includes those stirrup pants and biker shorts. NO! NO! NO! Ladies, you are setting yourself up to be talked about and laughed at. I know. I talk about you. I laugh at you. Can't help it. You give me the motivation. That's why I don't wear those kind of pants. My children are finally old enough where they don't constantly have to be in my lap. Now if I could just sit down without this pouch winding up in my lap, I would have it made. I think my clothes would fit better, I know I would feel better and hey!; I might be able to get one of those skimpy thongs this summer! Sound familiar? If this is you, read on for some information on liposuction.
(This information was obtained from the ASPRS Liposuction brochure)
Liposuction or suction assisted lipectomy is a surgical technique to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body, including the chin, neck, cheeks, upper arms, above the breasts, the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. This procedure should not be used as a weight reduction program. The candidate should only consider this procedure as a method of removing localized fat pockets that don't respond to dieting and exercise. Most women have liposuction performed on their hips, thighs and stomach. Men usually have this procedure performed under the chin and around the waist (love handles).
The liposuction candidate should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations. If you have had previous surgery on the area you wish sucked, have poor blood circulation or have heart or lung disease, FORGET IT. Ladies, liposuction will not get rid of cellulite and the dimpling you get from it.
The scars from liposuction are small and very well hidden from view. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved and the possibility of complications. Some of these can include rippling or bagginess of the skin over the treated area, pigmentation changes (dark brown spots) that may become permanent if exposed to the sun and asymmetry which is uneven contour or shape which may sometimes require a second procedure. Other infrequent but possible complications associated with all surgical procedures include infection, excessive fluid loss which can lead to severe illness or even death as well as fluid accumulation which must be drained and injury to the skin. It is important to follow ALL of your surgeon's directions.
You'll have to wear a compressive garment (girdle) after surgery. This will help reduce swelling and help your skin shrink to fit your new contour. It is recommended that you wear this garment continuously for about 2-3 weeks. It takes about a month or two for the swelling and discoloration to go away after surgery. However, some swelling can remain for six months or more. Be sure to keep all of your follow up appointments with your surgeon. The results are permanent, providing you eat sensibly and exercise regularly. If you do gain weight, you'll probably gain it more uniformly throughout your body, not just in the former "bulges".
Remember, liposuction is not going to save your marriage, make you popular or turn back that biological clock. It can boost your self esteem and self confidence. If you are considering this procedure, do it for yourself and not anyone else. This is your body. You are in control! No matter what cosmetic or elective procedure you are going to have, make sure your surgeon is BOARD CERTIFIED and well trained. You have the right to ask questions and get answers. Be a well informed patient. Good Luck and GOD BLESS!
