My Tips, Hints, and Guidelines List For Creating Websites

  1. If you use Netscape and wish to use Netscape Extensions keep in mind only a small number of Web Browsers use Netscape. These people will not see the Netscape Extensions.
  2. Limit the amount of pictures to about 10.
  3. Use lots of links, don't make your homepage all one page.
  4. If you have large pictures make thumbnail links to them (e.g. make a smaller version of the picture which can be clicked on for the full version), and specify the file size so the viewer can determine how long he/she will wait to download.
  5. Be sure to make your page legible even without the pictures.
  6. When using a picture:
    <img src=up_arrow.gif alt="Up">

    Use this instead:
    <img src=up_arrow.gif alt="Up" width=abc height=xyz>

    This will speed up the transfer for people using Netscape since it doesn't have to wait to download the picture to know its size.
  7. It is not recommended that teens have a picture of themselves on their web site so here are some things to do instead:
    1. Use a baby picture.
    2. Shadow your face.
    3. Use electronic distortion.
    4. Take a picture of a pet.
    5. Make a cartoon of yourself.
    6. Use a non - profane body part (e.g. your hand).
